Natural raises $30M for AI agent payments

What has changed: a $30 million round to rethink autonomous payments

On July 20, 2026, Natural announced the closure of a $30 million Series A round. The startup, founded in 2025, aims to build a payment infrastructure specifically designed for AI agent. According to reports by TechCrunch, the stated goal is to challenge Stripe in the machine-to-machine autonomous transaction segment.

However, the challenge is not trivial. Stripe is the global benchmark for digital payments today. Therefore, Natural's move signals that the market perceives a real gap: existing payment architectures are not designed to handle transactions executed without direct human intervention.

Furthermore, the timing is significant. 2025 has seen a marked acceleration in the adoption of AI agents in business contexts. Consequently, the demand for financial infrastructure compatible with these automated workflows has grown proportionally.

The Architecture of the Problem: Why Traditional Payments Aren't Enough

To understand the scope of the initiative, it is useful to clarify what is meant by stand-alone transaction. An AI agent, when performing a task, may need to purchase data, activate paid APIs, book cloud resources, or complete orders on behalf of a company. All of this happens without a human approving each individual operation.

Current payment systems, including Stripe, are designed around a human-centric model. In fact, they require authentication, identity verification, and approval flows that assume a flesh-and-blood operator. In contrast, an AI agent operates continuously, in parallel, and often in micro-fractions of a second.

According to the analysis of Gartner, By 2028, more than 33% of business interactions with software will involve autonomous AI agents. Therefore, the need for a native financial layer for these agents is not speculative—it is structural.

Natural aims to build exactly this layer. In particular, the approach involves financial identities assignable to individual agents, programmable spending limits, automatic audit trails, and real-time reconciliation. These are functionalities that traditional payment APIs do not offer natively.

Immediate impact on e-commerce and marketing automation

For the marketing and digital managers of Italian companies, the most immediate impact concerns two areas: Automated e-commerce e Marketing automation pipeline.

In the e-commerce context, AI agents are already used to manage automatic restocking, supplier negotiation, and dynamic pricing personalization. However, whenever these agents need to execute a real transaction, the flow is interrupted and requires manual validation. Consequently, the advantage of automation is partially undermined.

Similarly, in pipelines digital marketing, AI agents can optimize campaigns, allocate budgets to Google Ads o LinkedIn and purchase media space in real-time. Therefore, a native payment infrastructure for AI agents would allow this loop to be closed in a completely automated way.

Beyond this, implications arise for the SEO and content production. Agents who purchase search data, access proprietary databases, or commission content via APIs need a smooth payment mechanism. We at SHM Studio we are already seeing it as a relevant theme in projects of Applied AI that we follow for our clients.

The perspective of Italian SMEs: concrete opportunities and risks

Italian SMEs find themselves in a peculiar position. On one hand, they are adopting AI automation tools at an increasing speed. On the other hand, the financial governance of these automations often remains informal or relies on manual workarounds.

Therefore, the arrival of players like Natural introduces both opportunities and risks. On the opportunity front, a native payment infrastructure for AI agents could drastically reduce the operational costs associated with human supervision of automated transactions. In particular, for mid-market companies with small marketing teams, this translates into a significant efficiency multiplier.

On the risk front, however, financial delegation to AI agents introduces new vulnerability surfaces. The Harvard Business Review has already highlighted how the governance of autonomous AI agents represents one of the main organizational gaps for the next two years. Therefore, adopting these technologies without an adequate control framework exposes companies to operational and reputational risks.

Finally, there is the issue of compliance. Autonomous payments must comply with PSD2 and GDPR regulations in the European context. Natural will have to demonstrate that it can operate in accordance with the European regulatory framework before it can significantly penetrate the Italian market.

The construction site is still open: what's missing for market maturity

Although the $30 million round is a sign of investor confidence, the AI agent payment market is still in its early stages. There is a lack of shared standards, identity frameworks for agents, and reconciliation protocols recognized by traditional banking.

Furthermore, the competition with Stripe will not be linear. Stripe itself is investing in AI agent functionalities, as shown by recent evolutions in its API. Therefore, Natural will have to build a clear differential advantage before established players close the gap.

For digital managers in Italian companies, the operational advice is to monitor this evolution without adopting premature solutions. Later, when more stable standards emerge—presumably by the end of 2027—it will be time to integrate these infrastructures into existing architectures. In the meantime, it is useful to map internal automation workflows that currently require manual validation; these will be the first candidates for integration.
